Commissioned Art-Show Frames
When a good friend and award-winning artist client asked me if I could dream up some unique frames for her for an upcoming exhibition at the famous, invitation-only Sooke Fine Arts Show, of course I said, “Sure!”. Elspeth McLean is internationally known for her Dotillism art and in particular, her Mandala Stone art, where she makes original mandala-themed creations on very-hard-to-find smooth, flat, shore rocks of just the right size and shape, that she hunts for on one particular beach on Southern Vancouver Island.
The frames for the Mandala stones are made from reclaimed, spalted (which is what gives it the unique colors and patterns), old-growth fir from an old deck. I saved this wood from being hauled to the land-fill, dried it and use it for special artistic projects and finish details. The cockatoo Dotillism piece frame was made from a small piece of clear, salvage cedar that had just the right grain pattern and colour tones.
While I mostly to architectural work, I love doing fine wood-working when I have opportunity or occasion. Let me know if you need something unique or special!
