Hugelkultur Raised Beds – Fantastic Results!
On this project, I suggested to the client that rather than fill the new cedar raised beds I had made completely with dirt, we instead implement Hugelkultur permaculture technique, wherein rotting wood and leaves are placed below the soil layer, acting like a sponge to take up extra moisture and then supply it to the soil above as the soil dries out, dramatically reducing watering needs while at the same time preventing water-logging.
The rotting wood also furnishes the soil above with beneficial fungi and other micro-organisms, supporting vigorous and dramatic growth without the use of fertilizers. This was proven with the abnormally phenomenal growth in the beds this year!
An earthen ramp and dry-stacked stone wall were also added to improve garden and yard access. The cedar was all sourced from a local Pender sawyer.
